11-day Peru Wildlife Spectacular: Dolphins, Birding and Machupicchu

This is an exclusive Birding Ecotours itinerary that focuses on providing an unforgettable experience in Peru regarding birding, scenery, wild life and dolphins.

If you are a birder travelling with non-birders, folk who are interested in wild life or you are a dolphin-lover or wildlife-lover, this trip will suit with you perfectly.

We will explore the waters of the Pacific Ocean where we will have the opportunity to look for the Bottle-nosed Dolphin and Dusky Dolphins.

The group of pelagic species of birds is quite interesting and includes Humboldt Penguin, Inca Tern, Southern Giant Petrel, Cape Petrel, Swallow-tailed Gull, Waved Albatross, Pink-footed and Sooty Shearwaters, Southern Fulmar, Parasitic Jaeger, South American Tern, among others.

We will have the opportunity to see a large colony of South American Sea Lions and Fur Seals near the coast where thousands of these curious animals will come close to our boat. These animals are very comfortable with the presence of humans and are completely friendly when visitors choose to take a bathe in the sea with them.

We will then fly to the Amazon city of Iquitos, which is the gateway of the mighty Amazon River and the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve where we will spend three days looking for the rare Pink River Dolphin and Grey River Dolphin. Both are possible to see along the Amazon Rivers in Northern Peru.

We will also view species of parrots such as Short-tailed, Blue-headed and Festive Parrot, Blue-crowned, Collared, White-tailed, Black-tailed and Violaceous Trogons, Wire-tailed Manakin, White-plumed Antbird, Black-tailed Antbird, Curl-crested Aracari, Cuvier’s Toucan, Black-collared Hawk, Spectacled Owl, Pompadour Cotinga and more.

The forest around our lodge is good for spotting the famous Brown-throated tree-toed Sloth and Pygmy Marmoset, the tiniest monkey in the world.

Finally, we will fly to the city of Cusco where we will have the opportunity to see several cultural manifestations such as Inca and Spanish remains. We will have the option of visiting the main square and some museums.

Birders will enjoy close up views of the endemics Bearded Mountainner and Rusty-fronted Canastero as well as other birds like Andean Negrito, Streak-throated Thornbird, Giant Hummingbird, Andean Gull, Puna Ibis, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle and more.

A train ride will take us to the legendary Inca ruins of Machupicchu, recently named as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We will enjoy a visit walking through the Inca halls as well as looking for birds like the Inca Wren, Green-and-white Hummingbird, Masked Fruiteater, Ocellated Piculet, White-capped Dipper, Torrent Duck, Andean Cock-of-the Rock and many more.
