17-day Southern Peru: Tambopata Premium- Amazon Rainforest and Macaw Clay LickThe Amazon rainforest holds the highest diversity of animals and plants on earth and, of course, the rate of avifauna is also high. The Tambopata-Candamo national reserve and the Bahuaja-Sonene national parks protect one of the largest and untouched amazon forests of the world. As an indication of the tremendous diversity of the area, the scientists found 33 different species of ants in a single tree, 595 species of birds have been recorded around the famous Explorers-Inn lodge that owns 110 hectares of land. The largest known macaw clay lick of the world is located along the Tambopata River where every morning, birders and parrot lovers enjoy a colourful wildlife show with six species of macaws producing huge flocks flying above them. The area is the last refuge of several endangered species of animals like the Giant River Otters, Tapirs, and Jaguars but also of the Harpy Eagle, Rufuos-fronted Annthrush, Rufuos-headed Woodpecker, Pale-winged Trumpeters, White-cheeked Tody-Tyrant, Razor-billed Curassow and Crested Owl. Birding Ecotours invites you to join our new Tambopata Premium itinerary to take you to visit five different lodges located along the Tambopata and Madre de Dios River in order to see as many birds as possible. Your private leader’s ex-alumni of the Explorers-Inn will make the effort to show you the birds and wildlife too. We will visit the Explorers-Inn lodge, the 45 meters high canopy tower of Posada Amazonas, the macaw clay lick near Tambopata Research Center and finally the varzea forest of Eco-Amazonia where afterwards, to see more birds including the Black-faced Cotinga, the participants will be able to bathe in the swimming pool in the middle of the jungle.
