ENDEMIC TOUR 1

South Africa

South Africa is the most endemic-rich of all African countries. During this long tour, we move around a lot, working hard to find almost all the endemics of this big country. Although we do stumble across a ton of spectacular scenery and mammals, these endemic mega-tours are for almost cleaning up on endemic birds and are pose an exciting challenge. Starting in Kimberley right in the middle of South Africa for two recently-described pipits, we then head westwards towards Namaqualand and the West Coast, where we hope to find a plethora of localized (some of them incredibly so) larks, bizarre warblers, bustards and a host of others. Working our way southwards along the Great Western Escarpment, we eventually find ourselves in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town, which has a host of fynbos endemics. Then we head eastwards through the Garden Route, the Little Karoo (picking up further endemic pipits, turacos and all sorts) and eventually to Wakkerstroom which is one of South Africa’s most famous sites for endemics. From Wakkerstroom, it is an easy drive to Zululand and the East Coast where yet more southern African endemics lurk (many of them found only in northern Zululand and southern Mozambique). We end this tour by ascending the famed Sani Pass high into the Drakensberg Mountains and in fact briefly into Lesotho. We time this tour perfectly at the end of winter/beginning of spring to find the two new pipits (which are winter birds), and to be in the Cape at the right time when birds such as Clapper Lark and Knysna Warbler are starting to display and sing (August/September are the peak months for this). On completion of this tour, we are also poised well to start the Namibia Endemic Tour at the best time to find the specials of that country (including breeding migrants such as Damara Tern).
