Scouting Trip to seldom-birded provinces of South Africa Starting in the mile high city of Johannesburg, we ascend further to poorly-birded (compared to Sani Pass) parts of the Drakensberg Escarpment. We find a host of Drakensberg endemics in beautiful mountain scenery in the Free State and Eastern Cape Provinces. We then descend to picturesque mid-altitude grassland in the Eastern Cape where forest patches host some exciting species such as Cape Parrot. Finally, we bird the remote Wild Coast, where we will keep an eye open for the possible relic populations of a bird otherwise thought the be extinct in South Africa – Egyptian Vulture. We’ll can also spend some time searching for the type subspecies of African Barred Owlet, which is spectacularly rare. This trip is exciting because we’ll be looking in parts of South Africa that are poorly-birded, but which have good bird diversities and are scenically beautiful.
