Going for a Lark A quest to find all the tough larks of the Northern Cape Traversing beautiful Namaqualand scenery (in some years covered in the world’s most spectacular floral carpets), this trips starts with a drive from Cape Town towards the Namibian border. We then spend the next day descending the escarpment, possibly finding birds such as Damara Canary en route, to the desert coast where we will look for Cape Long-billed Lark and the extremely localized Barlow’s Lark, both of which inhabit the low dunes which are heavily mined for diamonds. Heading inland again towards Augrabies Falls National Park, we look for other extremely localized and sometimes difficult-to-locate larks such as Sclater’s, Stark’s, Black-eared Sparrow- and Red Larks, together with the more ubiquitous species. We might also find other tough birds such as Burchell’s Courser. After a huge loop, we eventually arrive back in Cape Town.
