Kwazulu/Natal, South Africa
Flufftails or Pygmy-crakes are amongst the most skulking birds on the planet – much more elusive even than typical rails. Although often heard, few birders have ever seen even one species. And, only a handful of highly skilled birders have seen more than three different ones. On this trip, we look for four species! Red-chested Flufftail is probably the easiest one to find. We also have reasonable success rates with Buff-spotted and Striped Flufftails. We’ll try for White-winged, one of Africa’s rarest birds, but we’ll be extremely lucky to see it or even to hear it. Since flufftails are so incredibly difficult to find, we may not even see any during this trip, but we do hope for at least two. There is almost nothing more exciting than actually laying eyes on one of these diminutive, beautiful little chicken-shaped birds as they emerge into a clearing for a few seconds. On this trip, we also have a chance of finding Great Bittern, another bird very few South Africans have seen because of its scarcity and elusiveness. As a by-product of looking for these incredibly tough birds, we’ll also see stunning scenery and a lot of other birds, including some Drakensberg endemics.
