5-day Trip to the Kalahari Birding Adventure

Day 1: You will board your flight from Cape Town International Airport to the City of Upington where you will be met by your guide and transferred to the Augrabies Falls National Park. The park is named after the 56m high Augrabies Falls and is set in a very arid landscape, home to a great variety of succulent plants. Here we will find many species of bird typical of the Karoo biome such as Double-banded Courser, Ludwig’s Bustard, Chat Flycatcher and Namaqua Sandgrouse. Around the campsite we might find the resident Short-toed Rock-Trush, Dusky Sunbird and Orange River White-Eye. Echo Corner is good for the localized Cinnamon-breasted Warbler and Verreaux’s Eagle regularly puts in a showing as well. Klipspringer is one of the more common antelope and night drives can sometimes be productive for carnivores such as Caracal, African Wild Cat and possibly even a Leopard.

Day 2: Travel to Kgalakgadi National Park, this 3.6 million hectare park is a real biodiversity hotspot. The sparse desert vegetation makes this an ideal place for game watching. It is also a haven for birders, especially where birds of prey are concerned. Brown Hyena and the impressive black-maned Lions are very real possibilities as is Leopard and Cheetah.  Raptors that we are likely to encounter include Bateleur, African Pygmy Falcon, Red-necked Falcon, Gabar Goshawk, Lanner Falcon and the ever present Pale Chanting Goshawk.

Day 3: Early morning birding in the camp at Twee Rivieren should find us White-backed Mousebird, Red-headed Finch and Acacia Pied Barbet. After breakfast we head North and in the first dunes we should look out for Pink-billed and Eastern Clapper Larks, Bat-eared Fox is also regularly seen here in the mornings. Waterholes should be scanned for Burchell’s Sandgrouse and Lion’s are quite often seen lazing around under shady trees. Nossob Camp is great for Owls and we should find Southern White-faced Scops Owl, African Scops-Owl and Spotted Eagle Owl. Night drives in the Kgalakgadi are unpredictable and depends a lot on having enough people interested.

Day 4: We will go out on a game drive before returning to camp for breakfast. Today we will use a different route back to Twee-Rivieren, we will encounter large herds of Springbuck, Gemsbok and hopefully some of the larger predators -  Lion, Cheetah and Leopard. If we are fortunate enough to find a kill we will almost definitely find the accompanying scavengers, the feathered ones might include Lappet-faced and White-backed Vulture’s. Other common mammals of the park include Ground Squirrels, Cape Fox, Red-Hartebeest and Aardwolf. Overnight at Twee Rivieren.

Day 5: After breakfast we tackle the drive back to Upington for your flight back to Cape Town. En-route we will keep an eye out for Fawn-coloured Lark, Sociable Weaver and Northern Black Korhaan.
