14-day Gabon Tour Picathartes, Lowland Gorilla and Mandrill Gabon arguably offers some of the best lowland forest birding in all of Africa with over 670 species recorded to date, add to that a whole plethora of mammal species and this becomes a must visit country. The country also offers three different grassland biomes as well as numerous large rivers, palm thickets, woodlands, mangroves, coastal lagoons and sandy beaches. This is the ideal place to come to grips with some of the difficult to find Congo-Basin species. We coincide our trip with the gathering of tens if not hundreds of thousands of African River Martins and Rosy Bee-Eaters which gather here at the onset of the breeding season, the sight of these birds swirling around in a massive unison is a sight that one will not easily forget. We will look for grey-necked Picathartes in Lope National Park which is equally famous for huge troops of Mandrill, the occasional sighting of Chimpanzee or Western Lowland Gorilla as well as good scatterings of Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo and a plethora of monkey species. Although it is an expensive country to travel, those who make the effort will be richly rewarded. Target Birds: White-crested Tiger Heron, African Grey Parrot, Grey-necked Picathartes, African River Martin, Rosy Bee-Eater, Great Blue Turaco, Lyre-tailed Honeyguide, Vermiculated Fishing Owl, Pel's Fishing Owl, Black Guineafowl, Black-headed Bee-Eater, Grey Pratincole, Dja River Warbler, Yellow-throated Cuckoo, Long-tailed Hawk, Congo Serpent Eagle, Gabon Helmet-Shrike and many, many more. Target Mammals: Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo, Western Lowland Gorrila, Chimpanzee, Mandrill, Red River Hog, Sitatunga and many species of monkey.
